The Battle for Intro. 2: The New York City Gay Rights Bill, 1971–1986
Initially proposed in 1971, the Gay Rights Bill in New York City was the first of its kind in the nation, meant to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in housing, employment, and public accommodations. After 15 years of grassroots activism and strident opposition, the bill, known as local law Intro. 2, passed in City Council in 1986 by a vote of 21 to 14, making New York the 51st city in the country to pass such a measure.
Join us as we revisit the heated debates about gay and lesbian rights during the mayoralties of John Lindsay, Abe Beame, and Ed Koch-and consider the question of why it took so long for the bill to pass. Panelists also discuss the roles of advocate...

So economists are just people who perpetuate colonialism. The bartering story from conning really doesn't make sense. Economics is a pseudo science so he really is a con. How can you have infinite growth with finite resources? Coloniasm

This conning is The best example, actually, because for him, europe is the world, and that every relationship is transactional, never built upon respect or mutual trust. When all you know is western history and western values, rugged individualism is the cultural idea that perpetuates capitalism. The global south has to rise up and undo, all of the damage the west has done.

Here's the trick, I think: debt is a contract, but there's a meta-contract behind it (the law) which specifies what happens when the contract is broken (beyond the bounds that it specifies). there is international law, but it doesn't hold over the USA. So if the debt is in dollars (which the US controls), you are basically a slave to the US, if we want you to be, without us *seeming* to rely on force, because the link back to the force is obscured by legalese.

21:55 - I can't fathom how a successful 46-year-old man at the time didn't pay his taxes for 3 (4) years, and then breezes by it here saying "it wasn't that much...maybe $20k", which is $140k+ today. This casual rationale takes the shine off of Jonathan Fanton's introduction for me. Though, reading a little more about the party's preceding corruption does make his back taxes sound like small potatoes. Still, it doesn't make me feel like celebrating this past in the present.

  • @jeesuekim

I read about it through a play someone gave me, but the real quintessential account is my current read by G.F. Davidson of 21 years and mentioning New South Wales and Australia and observation of the aboriginal tribes there and convicts in 1830-40. He mentions the different tribes and convicts for labor, with settlers, and one tribe he mentions if wronged will kill the very first white person they see regardless of age or any wrongdoing. They commit the act as some vindication of a wrong. Same as Crown Heights when an ambulance killed a Kato, the tribe there killed the Australian Rabbi instead of the court system. That is not blacks in America or Africa, but very Australian in terms of the aborigine tribe. The book is very keen on these observations and how they were viewed as labor and cohabitants during colonialization, unlike history books so brief and repetitive of slaves from slave trade in such two dimensional view. I feel in African and America and other slave labor developments, there were instances of "Exterminate the Brutes" and the source of such command is still vague to me in terms of massacres and life. It's tragic that Crown Heights led to such a riot to a frenzy where fact finding and truth of what happened wasn't clearly fleshed out for some political upheaval.

4:40 - I believe more precision here would've been helpful, specifically by highlighting that the U.S.'s poor are mostly white even if each race's fraction of poor is higher for minorities. Put another way, a large number of whites were not participating in the majority's prosperity. I write this not to minimize minority poverty, but to highlight that presenting poverty as a minority issue is a misleading mischaracterization.

I have a question. How in hell do you approach the subject and not establish the base fact that America is a war nation? That for nearly every year of its existence, America has been at war or fermenting war elsewhere in the world?? That America is entirely invested in war. That war is a giant part of America's very identity. Are you ignoring this fact? Or are you not aware of this fact? Jesus.

This guy's strong bias against the Duke Lacrosse team is obvious from virtually the first words out of his mouth. He makes lots of lame excuses for the rogue prosecutor (later disbarred and jailed) and the false accuser (now in jail for murder in a separate case). His apologies for the prosecutor are totally absurd and his cavalier dismissal of the notorious public letter written by the 88 faculty members is just ridiculous. He obviously sees himself as making the case for these rogues in spite of everything. He's totally unreliable and his stance is quite disgusting. Read Stuart Taylor Jr. and KC Johnson's "Until Proven Innocent" instead. Don't waste your time with Cohan's 600 page waste of time. He also repeatedly says "you know", a very annoying verbal habit.

Another alternative is time-based currencies as in LETS (Local Exchange Trading System) or CES (Community Exchange System). It can suffer from bureaucratic overhead and difficulty in adoption alongside an existing market economy, but it's possible to imagine a more efficient digital time-based economy. Possibly based on a secure append-only ledger, technologically similar to but otherwise very different from the blockchain crypto currencies of today. It's definitely worth exploring, I think.

What is it with European countries having problems with punishing the young and obnoxiously aggressive German nation? And to such an extent that they after even greater atrocities by Germany on the contrary reward the crimes with Marshal money and NATO membership. US would never go so gently on its adversaries - just ask Japan - and half a century of other countries. And it's not that European countries can't punish out of clemency - just ask Russia. Fact is that no European country had any problem with Germany - or fascism - until the unruly child became a menace to England and France. It's unjustified to go on wailing about how Germany was harshly punished.
